The Importance of Sulfur in Plants

The source of sulfur that can be absorbed by plants is elemental sulfur and sulfur found in organic matter. Plants take up sulfur in the form of SO 4 -2 ion. In addition, they can also take in SO 3 and a small amount of elemental sulfur through their sulfur leaves. Additionally, plants can absorb this element in the form of SO 2 gas.

Sulfur is an element that enters the structure of organic matter. Sulfur is found in the structure of sulfur amino acids such as cysteine, cysteine and methionine in plants and combines with them to form proteins. During this cycle, sulfur takes part in many enzymatic activities. Sulfur can be easily transported (mobile) within the plant. However, it is less mobile than N, P, K as it forms various compounds immediately after entering the plant. Sulfur deficiency shows symptoms very similar to nitrogen deficiency. What distinguishes nitrogen deficiency from sulfur deficiency is that sulfur deficiency, unlike nitrogen, is seen in young leaves.

The Function of Sulfur in the Plant

  • It accelerates nitrate and carbohydrate metabolism.
  • It can be used to lower pH in high pH soils.
Sulfur Deficiency Symptoms
  • Sulfur deficiency is very similar to nitrogen deficiency. The difference is that sulfur deficiency, unlike nitrogen, is seen in young leaves.
  • The leaves fall and the bud dies.
  • Protein synthesis decreases and productivity loss increases.
